This made-for-would-be-hipsters Fincher-cum-Tarantino-esque thriller is far too clever for its own good with plot twist upon plot twist, wise-cracking dialogue, chic production values, pop cultural references galore, a couple of hot bodies, Josh Hartnett and Lucy Liu, in the leads and propped up by a star cameo from Bruce Willis, and eminences grises Morgan Freeman and Sir Ben Kingsley, no doubt picking up nice paychecks for playing stereotypical arch-villians.
Jason Smilovic's convoluted screenplay is super slick and British director McGuignan is equal to the job. Some, young male devotees of computer games probably well to the fore, will identify with Hartnett's cool dude protagonist and enjoy the plot's twists and turns, others will tire of the endless contrivances and the American penchant for offing people as a form of entertainment.
