"Wayne's World, Wayne's World. Party time. Excellent".
A surprise worldwide hit, Penelope Spheeris's film is one of the best American post-adolescent suburban comedies out there. Based on a couple of unforgettably dorkish characters, Wayne and Garth, developed by Mike Myers and Dana Carvey on that seed-bed of American film comedy,Saturday Night Live, it is by no means uproariously funny but it keeps a smile on your face for the most part.
Whilst regularly trading in a familiar style of pudenda humour it also has a sufficient quotient of self-aware intelligence to make watching it a not completely embarrassing experience and sometimes even the most po-faced will crack. Whilst this largely stems from the irremediable dagginess of two inseparable buddies themselves there are some memorable set-ups like that of the guys in the Smurfmobile head-banging to 'Bohemian Rhapsody' or Garth lip-synching 'Foxy Lady' and lines such as "If she were an American President she'd be Babe-raham Lincoln".Schewing!!
FYI: The sequel, Wayne's World 2, released the following year, surprisingly, is of a consistent, if not better, quality.
