The fake documentary style of this foray into the familiar territory of the angst of modern middle-class Manhattanite allows Allen to achieve the kind of representational adequacy to his analytical proclivities and complexity of his usual subject matter that has largely eluded him since Hannah and Her Sisters. Judy Davis is a stand-out performer as a woman whose marriage to a university professor (played by Sydeny Pollack) is coming apart. As ever with Allen the autobiographical synchonicity abounds (he plays the second male lead) and this coincided with his spectacular break-up with Mia Farrow who appears for the last time in an Allen film.
