Love And Other Catastrophes

This remarkably good quirky low budget first feature is sometimes twee but overall an entertaining account of the emotional ups and downs of university student life, years which, are, it would seem at least in hindsight, our best.

Featuring Frances O'Connor, Radha Mitchell, Alice Garner, Matt Day, Matthew Dyktynski  and Kym Gyngell it is set and filmed at Melbourne University where director Emma-Kate Croghan studied writing and film directing.

FYI: Interested parties might like to check out Monkey Grip, also set in and around Carlton with an equivalent sub-culture but set a generation earlier when everybody dropped out of university as a matter of course. The film was based on a semi-autobiographical novel by Alice Garner's mother, Helen Garner and the former appears in it as a child.
